The upcoming president and CEO of Hydro-Québec is anticipated to be Michael Sabia, according to a number of media sites on Tuesday.
Sabia, Canada’s deputy finance minister since 2020, previously served as the CDPQ’s (Caisse de depot et Placement du Quebec) president for ten years.
According to the publication Les Affaires, his nomination will reportedly become official at the Council of ministers on Wednesday.
Sophie Brochu, who departed the Crown company on April 11 before her term was up, would be replaced by Sabia. Brochu claimed at the time that Hydro-Québec required a different profile for the following phase.
She used the analogy of building a house to demonstrate her point about Hydro-Québec’s strategic plan. Like an architect, she believed that her expertise lay in outlining the strategic plan while working with stakeholders from civil society. A person with strengths in operational execution would be needed for the following step, she stated.
She added at a press conference in February, “Don’t get me wrong, building the house is more challenging than designing it.
Sabia is Francois Legault’s pick, sources told La Presse. Sabia, 69, has a background in business as well as the federal and Quebec public services. He was also the CEO of Bell Canada Enterprises and the Chief Financial Officer of CDPQ from 2009 to 2020. Expectations are high for the energy critic for Québec Solidaire (QS), Haroun Bouazzi.
“Hydro-Québec is a unique company; we must prevent it from turning into the Dollarama of energy. Although Mr. Sabia lacks any background in either energy or ecology, it is hoped that he would concentrate on helping the energy transition succeed.
He stated that he was hoping Sabia would agree to come and submit his ideas because he had never heard Brochu in committee. The Official Opposition emphasised how important this is to the economy of Quebec.
“I want Mr. Sabia to have a successful term. We will get the chance to state our demand for a genuine national debate on the future of energy once more. Marc Tanguay, head of the Liberal Party, stated on Twitter that Hydro-Québec must take the reins.
