Mike Preminger News
Michael Preminger always manages to crack a joke. The seasoned stand-up comic, who has spent decades performing on some of the most renowned venues in the country, brings this quality to Los Angeles Jewish Health as a committed volunteer (LAJH).
Michael remarks, “The residents at Los Angeles Jewish Health are amusing and such a pleasure to be around.” “I questioned a woman named Edna, who was 104 years old, when I first started helping, if she would ever consider dating younger guys. Are there any other kinds? she asked without skipping a beat as she turned to face me.”
Michael has been returning to LAJHealth as a volunteer for more than ten years because of the friendship and laughter there. His numerous television appearances on The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, The Dinah Shore Show, and other shows demonstrated his professional satisfaction with his career achievement. Although he co-wrote the critically acclaimed and financially successful film Nothing in Common with Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason, it is his weekly trips to LAJHealth that bring him so great personal satisfaction.
I can still hear Rita, a woman, saying in Yiddish, “Vos geven iz geven,” which translates to “What was, was.” It basically acknowledges that we can’t go back in time and can only look forward, which I think is a pretty meaningful way to see the world “Michael declares.
Hearing residents’ tales is one of the things he enjoys most about working at LAJHealth. He screams, “I was told by someone that she went dancing with the Dodgers while they were still in Brooklyn. These people have accomplished such amazing things, and after hearing their stories, I feel as though I have travelled the world with them, from Brooklyn to Buenos Aires.
Michael himself is a native New Yorker who moved to Los Angeles in 1975 to pursue his love of show business after being born in the Bronx. While advancing through the ranks of comic popularity, he brought up a son and a daughter. His touring days have slowed down as a grandfather, allowing him to focus on other activities like supporting Los Angeles Jewish Health.
