Morgan Chesky, an NBC News correspondent, has been trekking all of his life but had never heard of high-altitude pulmonary edoema until a “absolutely frightening” occurrence that may have resulted in a cardiac arrest.
Chesky opened up about the experience on TODAY on Thursday, May 11. “I could have never imagined a trip to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks would end with me on oxygen in an ICU,” he said.
The journalist had never been to an intensive care unit or an ambulance before. When he first released information about the situation in April, he stated on Instagram that he had no idea what was happening.
He went hiking to commemorate his 37th birthday. On the programme, Chesky recalled “feeling off” as he walked with his uncle Eric at Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. His uncle had observed his nephew was walking a little more slowly than usual. Eric Chesky remarked, “That’s why I watched you like a hawk throughout the rest of the journey.
The following day, Morgan Chesky felt even worse while hiking in Zion National Park, Utah. He was dizzy, weak, and his heart rate was soaring. He had to stop frequently to catch his breath. The indicators were particularly ominous for him because his father had displayed same symptoms before passing away from a heart attack at age 48.
Sensing When Morgan Chesky was in distress, his uncle took hold of his bag, assisted him in getting off the trail, and then drove him an hour away to an urgent care facility. The journalist was transported by ambulance to Cedar City Hospital in Utah on April 23, when Dr. Jarid Grey discovered that his lungs were swollen with fluid and gave him the diagnosis of high-altitude pulmonary edoema, a severe form of high-altitude disease.
The simplest explanation, according to Grey, is that all of your capillaries in your lungs started bleeding plasma into the small space they were occupying, making it more difficult for oxygen to pass through.
The doctor said that if left untreated, a person may die from a lack of oxygen or experience cardiac arrest. According to the National Library of Medicine, half of patients who don’t receive medical attention in time pass away.
That is what occurred to John Magness, a 58-year-old experienced hiker who ascended Mount Aconcagua in February. His family reported that he died from a heart collapse brought on by HAPE hours later.
