Nick Eardley News

Richard Holden, the minister of transport, has stated that he is unable to provide a timetable for the placement of asylum seekers on a barge in Dorset.

The Home Office had planned to board the Bibby Stockholm, which is docked in Portland Port, with the first 50 migrants on Tuesday.

However, the arrival date has now been postponed, possibly until next week.

According to Home Office sources, the delay is the result of the port staff’s operating procedures not having received approval.

According to the local fire department, it has been advising the Home Office and vessel operators on fire safety.

When asked when the barge would be accessible on Sky News earlier, Mr. Holden replied, “I can’t put a timeframe on it.”

The checks will take however long they will take, he continued. It’s crucial that we do these things correctly.

When questioned about the delay, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that “all accommodation has to go through a series of checks and inspections.”

Additionally, he justified the procedure, saying it was “unfair” for taxpayers to foot the bill for “six million pounds per day to house illegal migrants in hotels.”

In an effort to save money on hotel rooms, the administration plans to put male refugees on barges.

In the upcoming months, senior ministries intend to confirm the usage of additional barges.

They have had trouble locating ports that are willing to house them thus far; among those that have been turned down are one near London City Airport and another on the River Mersey in Wirral.

The government is hopeful that a successful program in Dorset will inspire other regions to participate.

However, any safety concerns would reduce the likelihood of expanding the usage of barges.

50 men are initially supposed to reside in Bibby Stockholm. But in the upcoming months, that number might rise to more than 500.

Men could now share accommodations on the barge thanks to a Home Office decision that greatly increased capacity.

However, there has been opposition to the plan, with local council members, citizens, and South Dorset’s Conservative MP Richard Drax calling for the removal of the barge.
