Twenty-first graders and six teachers were shot and killed inside Sandy Hook Elementary School ten years ago. The victims included Dylan Hockley. So we’ll never know what he may have been, Nicole Hockley said. “He was simply a very wonderful guy, and he is eternally 6.” But. It just makes me so very thrilled to think of him.
Dylan was a first-grader who was happy, playful, and grinning. Ten years after the unthinkable occurred, Nicole Hockley will always remember her son in this way. On December 14, 2012, a shooter started shooting inside an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.
Hockley added, “Sometimes it’s extremely difficult for me to comprehend that this is, you know, he’s he would be 16 now. “He’s still six, but in another ten years he’ll be 26.” And I truly can’t figure that out in my head.”
By channelling her grief into action, Nicole Hockley has made it her duty to preserve the memory of her son. Along with Mark Barden, the dad of Daniel, a second first-grader who died that day, she helped co-found the organisation Sandy Hook Promise. The organization’s effective “Speak Something” campaign encourages schoolchildren to spot danger flags.
“We’ve thwarted 11 plausible schemes to shoot up schools. 400 suicide attempts have been avoided, there have been thousands of mental health interventions, and bullying and isolation have decreased. The programmes are therefore completely effective, and we will merely keep expanding upon that.
Hockley has fought for gun safety legislation for years, all too frequently running into obstacles, but this past summer, something finally happened as a result of his efforts. Both houses of Congress approved a bipartisan bill on gun safety. The “Safer Communities Act” increases background checks, aids in the implementation of red flag laws by states, makes investments in mental health and enhances school safety.
According to some, it went too far. It was the most important gun safety law to be passed in perhaps 30 years. That is a major deal, then. Only after a comparable shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and almost ten years after Sandy Hook did the bill become law.
