Pandora Sykes News
If there’s anyone whose literary recommendations we can rely on when we’re looking for a wonderful book to read, it’s Pandora Sykes. She will serve as a judge for the Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2022 in addition to being the host of the podcast The High Low.
That is what makes her most recent endeavour so intriguing. Two weeks after Sykes revamped our Stylist Live reading recommendations, she announced that she will soon be creating a new podcast that will be entirely dedicated to books.
Isaac And The Egg author Bobby Palmer and Sykes will host the event, which is dubbed Book Talk (a fantastic name). The podcast will do “what it says on the tin,” according to the trailer. Each episode will have Sykes and Palmer each bringing a book, after which they will converse.
The books must be at least two years old, and that’s the only restriction. That’s right, the two will be discussing well-loved novels that are already on their bookshelves and probably on yours as well. There won’t be any new releases, hyped-up reading, or top 10 blockbusters here.
The idea is that we look to books that we may have purchased years ago and completely forgot we even possessed, rather than urging us to run out and buy the most recent edition of whatever is all over our Instagram feed. Alternatively, we can borrow the book from a friend or purchase it used.
And we’re only going to release an episode once a month in this environment of constant consumption and cultural overload, says Sykes. “We’ll announce our books for the following episode at the conclusion of each one.” Imagine it as a traditional book club, only in podcast form and featuring Bobby Palmer and Pandora Sykes. To us, that sounds good.
The first edition of the podcast will be available on December 1; further episodes will follow on the first of each subsequent month. Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City is the first book Sykes should check out from the library, whereas Sarah Winman’s Tin Man is Bobby’s selection. Search your book shelves or head straight to the library to get a copy of Sykes’s initial choice, Tales Of The City by Armistead Maupin, and Palmer’s selection, Tin Man by Sarah Winman.
