Review of Pathu Thala
There is no scarcity of films in South Indian film industries that depict the struggle between a daring cop and a dreaded mobster. What truly distinguishes a film in this genre, however, are the events and incidents that unfold, bringing the audience closer to the characters’ world. Pathu Thala, the official Tamil version of the famous Kannada film Mufti, features several unforgettable moments, however, the film’s endeavour to continually engage the audience often comes across as forced.
Shakthivel (Gautham Karthik), an undercover detective, investigates the abduction of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Santosh Pratap (Santhosh Pratap). He suspects AGR (Silambarasan TR), a dreaded thug, is to blame. However, AGR’s dominance in the sand mining industry makes gathering evidence against him difficult. While attempting to acquire AGR’s trust, Shakthivel discovers disturbing secrets that challenge his determination.
Pathu Thala, like the original film, features STR prominently in the second half. However, this is where the plot tightens and becomes more compelling. The first sequences in which Shakthivel learns about AGR’s power and influence fall short of hooking the spectator. The film’s essence, though, is found in the post-interval sections, with STR providing a memorable performance.
While the cliche of a gangster as a do-gooder for the people around him and a criminal in the eyes of the government is not new, the staging and drama in the second half of the film make it more interesting. Pathu Thala incorporates elements of betrayal and gory violence, as is typical of gangster films, but fails to leave a lasting impression or a strong connection with the central characters.
