Paul Eckstein News

At the age of 59, actor, writer, and producer Paul Eckstein passed suddenly. His works included Godfather of Harlem, Narcos, and Hoodlum. He passed away quietly in his sleep on Tuesday, June 6th in Jamaica, according to a statement released by MGM+ and ABC Signature (via The Hollywood Reporter). For Strike Star Entertainment, Eckstein was in Jamaica to conduct a screenwriting class.

In the announcement, it is stated that “we are deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of our brilliant colleague, Paul Eckstein, the co-creator and executive producer of Godfather of Harlem and a beloved member of the MGM+ and ABC Signature families.”

The series was a labour of passion for Paul, who based it in part on the history of his own family. Paul was driven, a creative force, and well-known for his compassion and kindness. He will be sorely missed because he was many people’s friend and mentor. With his family, friends, and lifelong partner Chris Brancato, we send our condolences.

Eckstein, who was born and reared in Brooklyn, New York, earned honours degrees in both international relations and creative writing from Brown University. He later joined the Naked Angels Theatre Company as a founding member. The 1997 movie Hoodlum, starring Laurence Fishburne, Tim Roth, and Vanessa Williams, was his first production credit.

After that, he contributed to eight episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent as well as First Wave, The Dead Zone, Street Time, and other shows. The reason he’s perhaps most known is that he oversaw the writers’ room and created the first season of the popular Netflix series Narcos. Later, he produced Revival and Of Kings and Prophets in addition to developing the MGM+ series Godfather of Harlem.

In an interview with Den of Geek, Eckstein stated, “My biggest hope is that we continue to ignite this curiosity in people that they will go look at the history and discover who all these people are, what went down, and what happened.” “Because we Americans know absolutely nothing about our history. You only need to pick up a history book to witness the stupidity, which actually irritates me more and more every day. You get to watch my TV show since you won’t, however, do that. Similarly with Narcos.
