Paul Mauro News
The Director of the Bureau of Investigations and Enforcement (BIE) is a long-time Gaming Control Board investigator whose prior experience also includes work with the Secret Service and local law enforcement.
Mauro began working with the BIE in January 2006 as a Supervisor in the Harrisburg location. In April 2007, he was elevated to the position of Deputy Director. David Kwait, the founding director of the BIE, retired in December 2009, and Mauro took over as director.
Paul Mauro has effectively been running the BIE’s operations for more than three years, and he has proven himself to be a highly capable leader in this capacity, according to PGCB Chairman William H. Ryan. Paul has earned the respect of important figures in other branches of Pennsylvania’s law enforcement as well as his peers within the BIE and PGCB over his six years with this organisation.
Mauro’s career in law enforcement is noteworthy. He spent eight years with the Lancaster City Bureau of Police, where he earned the rank of Sergeant, three years as a Special Agent with the United States Secret Service, and four years as the Chief of Police for the Lancaster City Police Department.
In addition to his professional background, Mauro has a master’s degree in education from Kutztown University and bachelor’s degrees in accounting and psychology from Elizabethtown College. His wife, three children, and he all live in Lititz, Pennsylvania.
By conducting regulatory and suitability investigations, the Bureau of Investigations and Enforcement, a separate division of the PGCB, works to protect the integrity of the Commonwealth’s gaming business. In that capacity, BIE has investigated casino owners, workers, as well as manufacturers, suppliers, and gaming service providers interested in doing business in the Commonwealth’s gaming industry, roughly 50,000 times since 2005.
Strong collaboration with other state agencies, such as the Department of State, the State Police, the Office of the Attorney General, and the Department of Revenue, is required to carry out this duty. Strong collaborations with other gaming regulators in the United States further this cooperation.
Act 71, commonly known as the Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, was passed in 2004 and went on to create the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. The Gaming Control Board, Pennsylvania’s first brand-new state agency in almost 40 years, is in charge of regulating every facet of the state’s casino business.
Since the first casino opened in November 2006, the 11 now operating casinos have combined earned more than $6.5 billion in tax and licence fee revenue, employ over 16,000 people, and provide both slot machine and table game gambling.
