Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, informed the Supreme Court on Friday that Purnesh Modi, a former minister from Gujarat who had brought a defamation lawsuit against him, did not originally go by the surname Modi and that he is a member of the Modh Vanika Samaj.
Gandhi’s attorney, senior lawyer Abhishek Singhvi, told a three-judge panel of Justices B R Gavai, P S Narasimha, and Sanjay Kumar that despite numerous charges brought by BJP members against him, Gandhi has never been convicted of a crime.
Gandhi is appealing a Gujarat High Court decision that denied his request for a stay of execution in a defamation lawsuit involving his remark about the “Modi surname” to the Supreme Court.
Gandhi’s remark that “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?” was made during an election rally in Kolar, Karnataka, on April 13, 2019, which led to Purnesh Modi filing a criminal defamation complaint against Gandhi in 2019.
