Sam Stein News
Some editors find enormous satisfaction in the ideation and moulding of a story, while others savour the mentoring that comes with team leadership. Sam Stein is excellent at both, but his true talent is in recognising the potential in every story and in every author. He is a POLITICO at heart, a news junkie, a thinker, a journalist who is extremely passionate and thoughtful, and an observer of Washington and the rest of the globe.
Sam is a born leader who, in addition to overseeing our coverage of the 45th and 46th presidents, helped rebuild our skilled White House team, helped develop West Wing Playbook, and yet finds time to pen lovely profiles of influential Washingtonians.
His upcoming twelve months, as well as ours, are going to get a lot busier. Sam takes over as the newsroom’s 2024 election strategy’s deputy managing editor for politics with immediate effect. Sam’s new position entails organising election coverage among all teams engaged in the time-consuming task of covering a presidential election.
Elections and the practise of democratic principles are our publication’s obsession and the ultimate opportunity to prove that no one can cover races as forcefully and authoritatively as we can.
Sam will serve as our team’s captain in this endeavour, coordinating daily campaign coverage with national politics editor Scott Bland and his counterpart – all of whom will continue to report to Mike – in order to develop an all-encompassing strategy that makes the most of POLITICO.
Sam will continue to oversee coverage of the re-election from the White House, and once the campaign begins, Eun will be in charge of our daily White House report. It makes sense for Sam to make this transition into the centre of our election coverage. He spent three years as The Daily Beast’s politics editor, where he oversaw campaign coverage and assisted in overseeing the Washington newsroom, before joining us. He has a lengthy history of contributing to MSNBC and previously worked as an editor and reporter for the Huffington Post.
