Josephson, a 21-year-old, erroneously got into a car she thought was her taxi after ordering an Uber. Josephson was kidnapped and killed by Nathaniel Rowland, who employed childproof locks to keep her from exiting the automobile. He dumped her body close to New Zion, South Carolina, which is 65 miles (105 km) away from Columbia, where she had gotten into Rowland’s car.
The following day, Rowland was taken into custody and accused of kidnapping and killing Josephson. On July 20, 2021, a trial got underway. On July 27, a jury convicted Rowland responsible for the kidnapping and murder of Josephson, and the judge gave him a life sentence.
The murder received widespread media coverage and sparked debate about the risks of ridesharing and the necessity of first checking to see if a rideshare car is being driven by a licenced driver. Sami’s Law, which strengthens protections for drivers and passengers using ride-sharing services, was passed in New Jersey as a result of the murder. On January 5, 2023, President Joe Biden signed a federal law with the same name into effect.
Samantha Lee Josephson was raised in Robbinsville, New Jersey, after being born in Princeton, New Jersey. She studied political science as a major at the University of South Carolina. At the time of her passing, Josephson, a senior in college, had intended to graduate in 2019 and enrol in Drexel University School of Law. She received full scholarships to Drexel University and Rutgers University as well as a half scholarship and hoped to practise international law.
