Sarika Cullis-Suzuki News

Sarika was therefore startled to find scepticism from her parents when, at the age of 19, she made the decision to pursue an undergraduate degree in marine biology. “What a bizarre response, I thought. Yet, they anticipated that once I began researching [the health of ocean ecosystems], I would learn everything negative. Unfazed, the younger Cullis-Suzuki continued. In addition to co-starring with her father in “The Suzuki Diaries” on CBC’s The Nature of Things, Sarika joined the board of the David Suzuki Foundation in 2011. She intends to complete her PhD on the impacts of human-generated noise (such as boat engines and undersea drilling) on marine species in the Pacific Northwest this spring at the University of York in the United Kingdom.

Sarika has always had a physical connection to the environment. She caught her first fish by age two and tried out snorkelling. Also, she was present when Severn, her older sister, spoke to world leaders at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992 at the age of 12. As a doctorate candidate, Sarika returned to the idyllic Quadra Island, located off the east coast of Vancouver Island, to research the fish she had grown up swimming with.

She currently splits her time between working for the David Suzuki Foundation, finishing her dissertation, exploring Victoria with her partner Chris, a PhD student and river rafting guide, and taking care of their son Ryo, who was born in September. You can see which one of those wasn’t planned because my thesis was due the day before my baby was born, she explains.

Many first-time parents struggle with the idea of leaving a legacy for their children. When you’re an environmentalist, that question is very important. My nephews are interested in the natural world, so I spend a lot of time with them, says Sarika. “I want to take them all to see these lovely things before they’re gone, but my son is too young right now.”

Her family will always be a major source of inspiration for Sarika’s work, regardless of whether her primary concentration is academia, media work (like her 79-year-old father), or influencing legislation on Canada’s coastal oceans as part of an NGO. Environmentalism is similar to global housekeeping, according to my mum. I find that to be a really lovely perspective on the world. It involves accepting responsibility and taking action.
