Skylar Gaertner News
When your parents are laundering $500 million for a Mexican drug cartel, growing up can be difficult. Similar to dealing with your teen years on television, while with fewer federal crimes and less bloodshed, does present its own particular childhood experience.
Both were sampled by Sofia Hublitz and Skylar Gaertner. They have been starring in Ozark for the past five years as Jonah and Charlotte Byrde, the initially resentful and ultimately complicit children of Wendy (Laura Linney) and Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), the Navarro cartel’s go-to problematic parents.
Hublitz, who began working on the series when she was just 17 years old, tells Tudum, “We spent the last five years together shooting the show… this was my college experience.” “I got to work with people who have become my lifelong best friends, some of whom I talk to every single day, six months out of the year, every year.”
This kinship between the cast and crew was “almost instantaneous,” according to Gaertner. He says, “Just a really excellent, solid collection of people who get along resulted in it. The young stars found it to be “really natural” because the writers appeared to have this family dynamic down pat from the start.
Similar to how Hublitz and Gaertner immediately and readily slipped in throughout the casting process, Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy did the same. He recalls having Hublitz perform the parts for Ruth and Charlotte alongside Bateman in front of the show’s casting director, Alexa Fogel, and remarks, “They were pretty easy decisions.”
Jason asked Sofia after she had finished her audition, “So, do you have any plans for the summer? You might decide against making any plans. In essence, we informed her that it was in the space. Gaertner was “so sweet but also so smart,” according to Mundy. He is real, and I can definitely recall that.
From the beginning of casting, the straightforward family relationship developed behind the camera, even as things became complicated for their on-screen counterparts. Linney, who portrayed the mother of Gaertner and Hublitz, delighted in seeing her on-screen kids mature as their storylines deepened.
The fact that the plot actually coincided with their growth as performers and people, in her words, was great. It was wonderful to watch them pick up tips and improve their performance. That this was their first significant experience makes me happy. Gaertner and Hublitz agree that spending their formative years on television was out of the ordinary, but they also value the special opportunities that spending their adolescent years on site in Georgia gave them.
