In an effort to combat government waste, Steve Barclay has fired one in every six civil officials at the Department of Health and Social Care.
According to official statistics, the Health Secretary currently supervises hundreds fewer mandarins than he did at the beginning of Rishi Sunak’s reign.
On October 31, the first day of Mr. Barclay’s first full week in his current position, the department employed around 3,978 federal servants.
According to information provided by the Department of Health and Social Care in answer to a written parliamentary question submitted by Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, this number had decreased to 3,316 by July 18.
The Telegraph was informed by a Whitehall insider that Steve has always been interested in streamlining the bureaucracy and maximizing public dollars.
“This dates all the way back to when he was chief secretary to the Treasury and a member of the public accounts committee after first being elected to the House of Commons.
“In just a few months as Health Secretary, he’s been able to significantly reduce the number of civil servants in the Whitehall department, while making sure that more money is going to the front line – be it more money for doctors and nurses or the latest technology, all of which are aimed at cutting waiting lists and getting people better treatment more quickly.”
According to The Telegraph, the reduction in staff was primarily accomplished through a block on hiring, but it also included a decrease in the employment of consultants and some voluntary layoffs.
In the spending review, it was decided to cut the number of full-time employees by 26%, from a peak of 4,950 at the conclusion of the previous fiscal year in March 2022 to 3,650 by March 2025.
But under Mr. Barclay, the department has hired 3,650 people 21 months early than what was agreed upon in the Review settlement.

Conservative lawmakers immediately praised Mr. Barclay’s repression.
South Thanet’s representative, Craig Mackinlay, stated: “Taxpayers should always celebrate when the Civil Service staff is reduced.
“It makes departments more lean, and in my opinion, more effective. It also liberates skilled people into the private sector, into the productive side of the economy.
“I frequently ponder what these ranks of employees in numerous government departments actually do aside from adding to the bureaucracy and annoyance of the general public who pay taxes for these services. Congratulations, Steve Barclay.
The Dudley North representative, Marco Longhi, continued, “This Government has invested in the NHS like no previous government.
The NHS is now the largest employer in Europe because of the enormous amount of money we spend on it.
“I believe that this news will bring great joy to the majority of people, especially since we always seem to lack physicians and nurses.
The people who use this priceless service should, one can only hope, benefit from the money being sent to the front line.
“Steve was the driving force behind Boris’s attempt to reduce the Civil Service by 90,000, and is putting this into practice at his own department,” said Sir Jacob, who served in Boris Johnson’s Cabinet with Mr. Barclay.
Nothing irritates taxpayers more than wasteful waste and overstaffing in the Civil Service, therefore others should take his lead.
Red tape
Two of Mr. Barclay’s main goals are to improve services and reduce red tape. He instructed hospital administrators to hire more doctors and nurses this month rather than managers.
