Tan Chuan Jin and Cheng Li Hui relationship – According to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday, Speaker of the House Tan Chuan-Jin and Member of Parliament (MP) Cheng Li Hui had a “inappropriate relationship” and were forced to quit because they refused to end it despite being advised to do so, most recently in February. Although Mr. Lee was unsure of the precise beginning date, he said that the connection had been going on since at least the 2020 General Election.

This information was provided by the prime minister to news editors at a briefing on the two resignations that were made public earlier that day.
At the briefing, Mr. Lee added that he will propose a new Speaker by the start of the next Parliamentary session on August 1st, at which time he would also be delivering a ministerial statement. Acting Speaker in the interim will be Deputy Speaker Jessica Tan.
Mr. Lee pointed out that Mr. Tan recently made news for using improper language in reference to opposition MP Jamus Lim during a “hot mic” incident.
But he went on to say that this was “the more serious matter”—the inappropriate relationship with Ms. Cheng, a Tampines Group Representation Constituency (GRC) MP.
He explained, “(This is) because there shouldn’t have been a relationship since she is an MP and he was the Speaker. Mr. Tan then offered his resignation and acknowledged that what he had done was inappropriate.
“I had already approved of his resignation. The people of Kembangan-Chai Chee and Marine Parade must first continue to be taken care of, I informed him. His connection with Ms. Cheng had to come to an end, according to Mr. Lee.
Since then, according to Mr. Lee, Marine Parade has been implementing succession plans, including designating Minister of Culture, Community, and Youth Edwin Tong and Minister of Manpower Tan See Leng as the GRC’s anchor ministers.
But just a short while ago, I came across data that strongly implied the couple had stayed together. Whether or not the plans were complete at that point, I made the decision that Mr. Tan had to leave right now.
According to Mr. Lee, they were expected to follow high standards of propriety and decorum because they were PAP members. “PAP MPs, whether they are backbenchers or ministers, must always uphold these fundamental principles. This is a vital necessity because without party discipline and honesty, we are nothing, he continued.
How Lee found it?
After the most recent General Election in 2020, according to Mr. Lee, he was made aware of the connection.
“I’m not sure when it started, but they were talked to and given advice. Sadly, the situation wasn’t resolved, and so it led to the difficult discussion we had in February of this year,” he stated.
If the hot mic incident hadn’t occurred, Mr. Lee was questioned about how quickly the affair would have come to light.
