Teofimo Lopez News

On Saturday night at the Madison Square Garden Theatre in New York City, Josh Taylor suffered a humiliating comeback defeat to Teofimo Lopez and forfeited the super-lightweight world title.

Teofimo Lopez defeats Josh Taylor convincingly to win the New York title.

Since his contentious defence of his unquestioned title against Jack Catterall in Glasgow’s OVO Hydro, the Scotsman had not competed. Since losing to George Kambosos Jr. at the same location in November 2021, former lightweight champion Lopez has competed twice.

And as the battle progressed, Taylor’s good early start was overturned by the fight’s later rounds, giving the American a final, easy victory. Lopez was granted a chance to claim a resounding triumph at the same theatre where he had humiliatingly lost his belts two years earlier thanks to a majority decision.

Although Claressa Shields, a famed women’s fighter, notably made her dislike for the ringside seats available at the show public, stars were out in full force for the event. Instead, a notable front row included actor Mario Lopez, former fighter Gerry Cooney, and UFC champion Israel Adesanya.

Although Lopez had a great start in the first two rounds, he struggled to land his hardest blows, such as a right hook that missed wildly practically at every angle. Additionally, there was disagreement in the third when Taylor looked to knock out his opponent with a counter-uppercut, but it was later determined to be a slip.

However, Taylor was the beneficiary of some intriguing officiating in the fourth as what appeared to be an even cleaner knockdown was not recorded. It didn’t stop him from pressing the matter, though, and when one of his right hooks eventually got through, he scored the greatest shot of the evening.

Lopez, who had ruined the build-up with a series of bizarre interviews in which he said he wanted to murder his opponent in the ring, put up another strong performance in the fifth. And in the sixth and seventh, when the momentum had nearly completely changed, he appeared frightening.
