Thulani Dlomo Career
From the age of 13, Thulani became involved in South African politics. He was an ANC member who battled for independence and was sent into exile. When he began serving as the Chief Director of the State Security Agency in 2012, he quickly rose to prominence in the public eye. In 2014, he was elevated to the position of SSA’s Deputy Director-General.
The SSA career of Thulani Dlomo was dogged by various scandals. Van Loggerenberg and Pillay’s positions at the South African Revenue Service (SARS) were allegedly removed as a result of his allegedly exploiting the South African intelligence to engage in dirty politics. Additionally, SSA was charged with attempting to undermine the former finance minister Pravin Gordhan, organising a fake labour union, and financial theft while he was in office.
In 2017, former president Jacob Zuma chose Thulani Dhlomo to serve as South Africa’s ambassador to Japan. His term as ambassador came to an end in January 2019 when President Cyril Ramaphosa, who had just taken office, ordered his recall. He has kept quiet ever since the recall, earning the nickname Thulani Silence Dlomo. When he didn’t show up for work again, the SSA decided to terminate him.
The previous ambassador to Japan has also had books published. In October 2020, he published The Encounter, his debut book. The Encounter by Thulani Dlomo uses the author’s experiences and political and economic skills to Rethink Africa.
