The first transgender model to appear on the French “Vogue” cover, Valentina Sampaio, will represent the LGBT movement during Milan Fashion Week.
The 22-year-old Brazilian, who walked for brands like Gisela Franck and Rchlo and was on the cover of Elle Brazil in November, is in the city to attend casting sessions in the hopes of landing a spot on the catwalk for the most prestigious fashion companies in the world.
The modest, green-eyed brunette told AFP in Milan, where the autumn-winter collections begin to be displayed on Wednesday, said she was “proud” of serving as an example for the LGBT community. She claimed that modelling for designers like Italian legend Giorgio Armani was her goal.
Her face lights up as she talks about the prospects celebrity and fashion might offer her in the struggle against transphobic prejudice while she is sitting on a bench in the sunshine.
Sampaio started her modelling career in Brazil four years ago and then joined L’Oreal as a “ambassador.” She claimed getting the coveted Vogue cover was crucial because “fashion is a means to stop people speaking about us with prejudice.”
This is a first for France, despite the fact that many fashion magazines in the US have already included transgender models. She replies in a gentle voice, “I want to keep pushing for a better society where trans people are seen as “normal.”
The model expressed her frustration with people who are neither heterosexual or cisgender being viewed as “an anomaly” in the interview, although never using the terms transsexual, transgender, or the acronym LGBT.
Those whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth are referred to as transgender. Some people who have permanently altered — or desire to alter — their bodies through medical procedures use the older term “transsexual.”
The Sao Paulo fashion week in October saw Sampaio, who has roughly 35,000 Instagram followers, dazzle the crowds as she strutted down the runways for Agua de Coco and Vitorino Campos.
