Vanessa Salmon News

One of the most skilled TV chefs is NIGELLA LAWSON, who has hosted several popular cooking series and sold more than eight million volumes worldwide. Nigella’s Cook, Eat, Repeat is one of them, and it will be on BBC once more tonight (Wednesday, March 9).

The programme pays respect to Nigella Salmon’s mother, Vanessa Salmon, whose death from liver cancer had a profound effect on Nigella’s perceptions of her health. The program’s title is also the name of one of Nigella’s books.

As she approached her 60th birthday in 2020, Nigella started to consider the loved ones she had lost. In addition to losing her mother in 1985 at the age of 48, Nigella’s first husband, John Diamond, died of throat cancer at the age of 47 in 2001.

Her sister Thomasina also died of breast cancer at the age of 32 in 1993. In a recent interview in honour of her 60th birthday, Nigella was upfront about her past losses and how the experience has taught her to ignore her age as long as she stays active and healthy.

The British chef and author admitted in an interview with Good Housekeeping that she had never been able to take for granted that she would still be alive at this age. My sister was 32 when she passed away, followed by my mother, 48, and John, 47. So, even if I were the type of person who made plans in advance, I doubt that I would have imagined myself in this situation, Nigella added.

Nigella continues, “I was brought up by a mother – the cook I have learned most from – whose grimly exuberant output in the kitchen was set in excruciatingly sharp perspective, and fostered, by an escalating pattern of self-denial and self-punishment; not an uncommon trait in mothers. “Two weeks before she passed away, she started eating for the first time, she stated giddily, without shame or worry.”

The now 62-year-old chef continued, reflecting on how her mother’s connection with food has influenced her own: “How excruciatingly awful to allow yourself unrestricted enjoyment of food only when you receive a terminal prognosis.”I don’t just want to eat for the sake of eating; I want to maximise my delight. I consider each chocolate square carefully before choosing one to let melt slowly in my lips.
