A political uproar has resulted from the death of Umesh Pal, a crucial witness in the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Raju Pal in Prayagraj. Opposition parties have said that similar events indicate a deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.

Lawyer Umesh Pal, 43, was fatally shot on February 24 in Prayagraj’s Sulem Sarai neighbourhood. According to the police, the attackers threw homemade bombs and fired multiple shots at them. Both of Pal’s two bodyguards were hurt in the attack, and Sandeep Nishad, one of them, died from his wounds.

The incident’s CCTV tape has gone viral, and the UP Police have organised eight squads to look into it. According to the postmortem report, Umesh Pal had 13 damage marks on his body and had been shot seven times.

Raju Pal led the BSP. In a November 2004 by-election for the Allahabad (West) state assembly seat, he defeated Atiq Ahmed’s younger brother Khalid Azim who was imprisoned. Soon after gaining the seat, Pal was murdered on en route to his village for the Republic Day parade in January 2005.

In the 2002 assembly elections, Pal ran for the first time against Ateeq Ahmed. Ahmed won the election, however after being elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004, he resigned.

Raju Pal won the subsequent by-election to fill Ahmed’s former seat. Azim defeated Raju Pal’s widow Pooja Pal to win the seat following Raju Pal’s murder. The primary suspect in the murder case, Azim, has already been charged by the CBI. Also charged with murder conspiracy is Ahmed.

He ran for office from Pratapgarh in the 2009 general election on his party’s ticket while doing time for the murder of Raju Pal. He had been dropped by the Samajwadi Party in 2008, and BSP chief Mayawati had also refused to give him a ticket. The vote went against him.

For the 2012 UP assembly elections, Ahmed was once more released on bail. On the ballot of his party, he ran for the Allahabad (West) seat. Pooja Pal, Raju Pal’s widow, won the seat this time around.
